Enjoying nature and the arrival of spring in February
Cosy rituals to welcome spring this February: a collage showcasing the transition between winter and spring.

February has arrived, and with it, winter is slowly paving the way for spring. While I appreciate the underrated beauty of nature in the winter, as well as cosy, dark evenings, it definitely feels more difficult for me to keep up with a busy daily life when the world around me tells me to slow down. January always feels like it drags on for a little longer than it should. Hence, I am looking forward to the beginning of spring with eagerness. This is how the idea of the Cosy Rituals Calendar came to mind.

Thus, to celebrate spring’s upcoming arrival and settle into February, let us establish a few rituals to welcome in the change in seasons and add cosyness to our daily lives. Here are five ways you can welcome spring this February and instill some new energy into your life.

Soaking up the energy of the longer days

A few weeks ago, it was already dark outside when I left work at 5pm. Today, the sun shines a little longer. Longer, brighter days are coming, and we should take advantage of them with open arms. Why not opening the windows a little longer each day? Bringing in the cold winter air gives a fresh feel to our homes every day. This is the perfect February cosy ritual to implement, mornings and evenings, in your home. To sustain the brighter days, keep up your fairy lights and turn them on once daylight fades. In short, create a balance between natural energy and artificial light.

I also recommend going on more walks – city walks, nature walks. The idea is spending more time outside as temperatures grow milder and the days are longer. When your work day is over, why not take a twenty-minute walk outside? This can be easily accomplished near home or near the workplace. Where is your favourite place to take a walk? Tell me in the comments below.

The changes of nature between winter and spring

Some of you, depending on where you live, may have already noticed the first blooms growing on the muddy earth. Last week, I spotted a few snowdrops floating in the winter wind, and it made me smile. In England, I have heard that daffodils are already showing their bright sunshine-coloured heads. This little, but noticeable, change in nature is a sign for us to welcome the seasonal shift into our homes. Buying a bouquet of flowers to decorate your home might be the best way to bring in some colour, and a little bit of spring, into your daily life this February.

Finding daffodils in shops in France is very difficult, but I will make it my mission to find some this month. What flowers have you already spotted where you live?

Observe the changes in nature to awaken your body and mind

Meaningful change is slow. In January, many decide to rush in, with Adrenalin and good intentions because it is the start of a new year. However, the calendar year starts in the middle of a season. We can’t expect our bodies and minds to follow the eager buzz of resolutions, new life-new me, and so on. When you look at nature in the winter, you see that life takes time to grow and change. Flowers take weeks, if not months, to start blooming from within the earth.

Come February, we can slowly start to awaken. Why not incorporate one or two new things, this month, that will bring in renewed energy for spring? It could be introducing exercise into your routine. My current favourite online work out coach is Move With Nicole. Her videos are gentle, centered around well-being and working with your body, not against it. I highly recommend her videos to start working out again.

Awakening your body also means nurturing it through foods you love and that are good for you. By no means do I refer to diets or restricting food habits – you will not find that on The Cottagecore Traveller. Instead, I invite you to take February as a month during which you will take the time to cook, bake and enjoy the fruit of your labour. In France, February 2nd is La Chandeleur, an old religious festival which marks the end of Christmas. In a mostly secular society, we now keep the tradition of making crepes at home. This is my favourite recipe, translated into English by a fellow blogger. My favourite topping is Nutella, but I do also enjoy a simple crepe with sugar and lemon juice. Maybe you should make French crepes this month?

Nourish your creativity this February

Winter is often a slowly season in terms of energy and creativity. As the seasons are changing, take the time to rekindle your creativity. There is nothing more comforting, heart-warming and inspiring than doing something with your hands. Creativity is like pouring a little bit of you into something that you can hold in your hands. It also allows you to have some tech-free time, away from social media.

With Valentine’s day around the corner, I will take the time to make my husband a handmade, painted Valentine’s card. Pinterest is a great source of inspiration for creative projects, but recently I have been searching on TikTok for new watercolour painting ideas. What is your favourite craft? And what’s a craft you would like to try this year?
